What I Love About Being Home

I have a post from earlier on titled, "Things I Love About the Road." Well, now it is time to tell you about the things I love about being at home. Ready?

  • Having a drawer, for anything, like jewelery, make-up, crafts, junk, etc. Everything I need is right where I need it to be.
  • Ready access to my entire wardrobe. I know, you're thinking, "Really? This is what you're excited about?" But you try living out of a suitcase for a year, and then tell me how much you missed your favorite bright blue suede pumps that you couldn't take on the road with you...
  • My bed is probably far superior to yours, and rivals every hotel bed I slept in in the last year. It is like sleeping on a cloud and I am so happy that I get to sleep in it every night.
  • Having the same parking space, every time, and always knowing where my car is, ie. outside by the mailbox.
  • The familiarity of it all, like the smell of the house when my dad cooks, or the way my room feels after a hot day in the sun.
  • They are going to think I'm fibbing, but being home with my mom and dad is awesome. They make me realize how lucky I really am. And, although I haven't quite grown accustomed to their TV preferences, I at least stick around for Jeporady and Huell Howser and watch with them.
  • Two words: Free. Laundry.
  • Getting dressed for work in the morning because a.) I have my entire closet to chose from and b.) I can ask those who are home (mom, dad and dogs) which outfit looks best. I only change like, two times in the morning. Ok, maybe three.
  • Ready access to good wine, and the right people to drink it with.
  • The Dogs, I'm finding, will never respond to me when I talk to them, but it is so nice to see them wagging their tails at me every morning when I wake up.
  • Proximity to family and friends in California is pretty grand because we are all in the same state, or I guess I mean, I'm in the same state. Visits to San Francisco or San Diego are much easier than before, and thankfully, much more frequent!

It isn't an easy transition being home, I will tell you that much, but I am thankful to have a wonderful, loving place to come home to. My patent pumps happily sit on a shelf in my closet, and are happy to trot down to Sylmar every once in a while, when I wear them to work.

Happy Belated Birthday, America!

Yes, I know this photo lacks any sign of patriotism, flashy Americana, hot dogs or fireworks, but I will tell you, it oozes Wild West, and captures the wilderness of a part of America I do love so much. Lucky me, I got to spend Independence Day with all of my favorite people (minus the Little Bug of course, who is having the time of her life in Washington State), at the Kern River, where I captured this serene scene. There's nothing better, in my opinion, then being outside and spending time with your family and friends- if the weather is good of course. Although the trip was far too short, I soaked up the sun, lounged in the icy creek, and learned quite a bit about fly fishing. In fact, did you know that on July 4th, you don't need a fishing license? Thank you Department of Fish and Game!

The patent pumps did not come out for this trip- instead, I sported sandals and yes, do I dare say... Crocs!! I swear, they are only for camping!!!

Practice Patience

Practice patience- something I’ve learned to appreciate in the last year for certain. Patience while you wait for a delayed flight. Patience while you wait for lost luggage to arrive. Patience to hear back from people you need information from. Patience to see people you’ve been away from and want to be close to. Patience to find the next job, the next path, the next direction.

Dear Reader, THANK YOU for being patient with me! More than a month has passed since my last update and the Patent Pumps have been ALL OVER the place. Indiana to California, to New York, and then back to California and off to Indiana again- it never ended. Except, it did. About three weeks ago, and it was an awfully bittersweet ending. The unexpected passing of my grandmother took away my focus from The Organization, and as I once again crossed the country to return home to be with my family, I knew that this ending was anything but the ending I had desired for this year long experience on the road. Despite being away from my family at the end, and the horrible pain I was feeling from the loss of my grandmother, I never felt more supported by The Organization than I did in those last few weeks. Sisters from across the country reached out to me in love and support. My family was not just at home in California, but spread out across the country- connected through our sisterhood, wisdom, and devotion- and I did not feel alone.

On a lighter and more cheerful note though, my last trip to Indiana (well, for a while at least) was rather marvelous. My last day in the office came and went, and although I did miss my other Patent Pumped traveling companions, it was time to turn in my bag and patiently wait for my next big adventure. While waiting though, I spent the week sprucing up a friend’s house in Fishers- mulching, weeding, landscaping, etc. It may not sound exciting to you, but it was fun to get a little dirty and “play house” for a week. I ventured to Indiana’s oldest bar, The Slippery Noodle, in downtown Indianapolis, for great music and dancing and met up with my best friend for a truly wonderful night.
Sad to leave Indiana and present company at the end of the week, I flew down to North Carolina for two weeks to spend time at the Beehive and celebrate Elon Graduation with all of my friends. It was surreal to be back for the week- strange to think that a mere year ago I was there receiving my diploma- but wonderful to share in the moment with all of my friends who were graduating. Not only did I discover that I am really missing the brick paved walkways of Elon, but I am also missing the Carolinas. A stint in Raleigh during my visit made me think seriously about moving to the capitol city. Perhaps I will have to wait patiently until an opportunity arises for me to move back there- it is a definite possibility.

Save the Best for Last

You know, they say you save the best for last…. Well, my current visit is definitely an amazing group of women, true representatives of The Organization if you ask me. Overall, the group here at Fullerton is an organized, supported (and supportive), creative group of leaders. They are well rounded and beautiful, friendly and amazing hostesses. They have been a joy to work with; a truly great way to end my long journey on the road.

However, in thinking back on my last year working for The Organization, I really don’t think I could grant any particular group as being “the best.” Surely, there were groups that I enjoyed more than others, but really, it was all due in part to circumstances. Each visit was important to me in its own way. One group may have been a bit more challenging than I had anticipated, and thus, encouraged me to work harder for them. Another group may have been dealing with a particular issue, and although I may not have been able to address all concerns equally, I helped them to make some progress against all odds. I’m not going into specifics, but I will give you a nice overview of my favorite experiences:

Best Hostesses: Irvine
Best Food: Berkeley
Most Entertaining and Enjoyable: Utah
Most Challenging, but Meaningful: Oregon
Most Dynamic: Sacramento
Most Driven: Boise
Best Location: San Diego
Most Fun: Los Angeles
Most Representative of The Organization: San Luis Obispo

I had lunch with a future Patent Pumped sister today, a girl who I had the privilege of working with several times this year in Southern California. I listened intently as she described to me how excited she was for her year-long adventure living out of a suitcase. At the same time, I could relate to her nervousness and all that she was anticipating before her exciting, new job is to begin later in the summer. A year ago, I’d never even believe that I’d learn as much as I have now. I feel truly confident to take on any challenge, in any field… except for maybe rocket science. It has been quite a year, and for once, I am at a complete loss of words to describe how I’m feeling for you all.

As I prepare to give my last formal Chapter presentation, I’ve carefully brushed off my patent pumps so that they shine, especially today. My badge is secured just above my Life Loyal pin, and I’m totally sporting my stereotypical “sorority girl” pearls today. That’s right, I’m owning it and proud. My heart is definitely heavy with sadness at not returning to work with such remarkable women. But, at the same time, I find that I’m consistently thankful for the opportunities that I’ve had and the relationships I’ve cultivated thanks to my membership in The Organization.

This won't be my last post, but I'm nearing the end, just FYI. Stay tuned for updates on where this show is taking off to next. The blogging will continue- new theme, new address.

Take me out to the ball game...

This time last year, I would've been cheering on the Greensboro Grasshoppers and Durham Bulls game with my sisterrs.... But I traded up and came to a major league game instead. Still came with my sisters though, no trading up needed there!

Out with the ladies of Cal State Fullerton who are remembering a member of The Organization tonight who was tragically killed in a car accident with Angels player, Nick Adenhart.

Flowers! Zot zot zot!!!

The lovely ladies of UC Irvine gave me flowers this week! They said it would help to brighten my room. They were right.

Only downside? No vase. So, the ice bucket shall have to suffice.

Stripes of Honor

Over the last year, I have noticed a handful of grey hairs making a stealthy appearance on my head of thick, dark brown hair. I’ve also noticed that not only are they starting to appear in greater numbers, but they don’t style the same was as other hairs, and they’re not as soft. Usually I just try and ignore the grey hair, but with my latest haircut (which I’m finally beginning to enjoy), I feel like they are all visible, all the time. This is most likely distracting during all of my meetings with women from The Organization….. they must think, “How old is this woman? She couldn’t possibly give me a good idea for our mixer. Look at all her grey hair!”

I have to credit someone else for coining the term “stripes of honor”, because although I developed the theory, he has invented the term, as per his witty self. Let me divulge. I was discussing with him the appearance of grey hair, presenting the old wives tale to him that if you pluck a grey hair, three more will sprout in its place!! Does your hair turn grey because of your genes? Or do you become a silver fox thanks to your stress level? Can you distinguish if you got them from one thing or the other? Probably not is what we decided. So, the theory.... I’d also like to think that these grey hairs represent some wisdom I’ve gained, or passed along to others, not just crappy genetics or stress. Sort of like that, because I’ve worked so hard and had some type of meaningful experience, I’ve earned this “stripe of honor” as a way of making me more illustrious, confident, successful. Have a productive meeting with the Dean of Students for The Organization- gain a stripe of honor. Put myself out there for a really fabulous job and get an interview- gain a stripe of honor. Get turned down from that really fabulous job- gain two stripes of honor and some helpful advice, and maybe a new direction too.

I may complain on occasion about these rogue hairs, but at the end of the day, I kind of appreciate their existence. I feel like it really does make me a bit more distinguished, signs also that I have truly earned these “stripes of honor” if they are truly stress related. That, or I’m destined to become a curator of my own fancy art gallery, or Cruella DeVille. I’m gonna hope it’s the former, but appreciate them all the same.

Logitech WebCam: I have had this device for a couple years now. When I was in school it was a great way to connect with friends who were studying abroad, or even catch up with my family and friends who I hadn't seen in a few months. Seeing faces makes all the difference- you get the emotion that you just don't get over the phone or a message. And, with free programs like Skype and Google Chat, I'm able to easily connect with friends all of the time. This particular WebCam packs up easily and plugs into my USB drive. Most WebCam's have auto focus now, so you're almost always going to have really clear images. For those late nights or weekends when I'm alone on the road, my WebCam makes it feel like my friends are right in the room with me.

Dear Milena,

You may not know this, but I’ve mentioned you before in my musings from the road- I do hope you don’t mind! I have thought of you countless times this year and have smiled, especially when I’ve worked with a group of New Members. And more than once I have felt your presence in a part of the country I’ve never explored. You know, I knew that joining The Organization would change me. I knew I’d have an infinite network of sisters and connections upon whom I could rely. I was confident that I’d foster lasting relationships, and develop as a strong individual. And then too, there are those thoughts that almost every young sorority woman has- of finding her bridesmaids and future play date buddies, etc.. I may not have gone that far (play date far I mean), but I do know that despite our abbreviated tenure, you changed my experience and the experience of others- permanently.

Today, I want to thank you more than ever, for your unending friendship, your consistent happiness and your contagious smile. I know I’m not the only one who will always remember how much your smile could brighten a room. There are 130 other sisters from Elon who knew that specifically- your initiation day comes to mind. I’ll never forget how gorgeous you looked the day you walked down the stairs after the days ceremony, and how happy you made everyone feel, myself included. You truly understand how to shed the light of love and friendship around you, and for that, I thank you still for showing love to all. The Organization is lucky to have you, for you are a member- always.

Loyally,

Ms. World Traveler

Rewind: San Francisco Mission District's Balmy Alley Murals

"Located a block from the Precita Eyes Mural Arts and Visitors Center in the San Francisco Mission neighborhood between Treat Avenue and Harrison Street, Balmy Alley has a concentration of more than 30 vibrant and colorful murals painted on fences, building walls and garage doors. In the Mission neighborhood densely packed with murals, Balmy Alley is at the center of it all. Muralists began working in San Francisco's Balmy Alley as early as 1971. Many of the original murals are still there as well as many murals that have been painted over the intervening years.

The Balmy Alley murals are very diverse both stylistically and in the subject matter. Some of the murals feature cartoon-like illustrations that playful and juvenile. Other murals along Balmy Alley grapple with difficult subjects, such as a memorial to people who have died from AIDS or depictions of political strife and war in Latin America. Another mural honors the great muralist Diego Rivera and his wife, the painter Frida Kahlo. And another is a tribute to women muralists of the Mission District. One colorless mural, depicts two men and a woman jumping through a barbed-wire fence lined with keys. The woman has her hand held high, making the peace sign.

One of the best parts of about San Francisco's Balmy Alley and the Mission District murals in general is that the murals are part of a thriving vibrant community that is as colorful and diverse as the murals themselves. On Balmy Alley, take a peak through the knot-hole of a mural-painted fence and you'll see and old car supported on blocks or a latino washing his truck or a patio table and chairs. Along the alley, you'll see signs that warn you to beware of dogs as well as a lettering for the Taqueria Vallarta, which is on 24th Street."

T-Minus 3 Weeks

I only have a handful of visits left before I will be putting my patent pumps away for a little while, and although I’m sad to be ending with The Organization, I smile profusely when I think back on the year I’ve had. The traveling alone has been priceless, and I know for sure that staying put in one place for more than a week is going to be a strange transition for me. Yesterday, as I was traveling to Arizona- where the weather is currently perfect, by the way- I reflected on how I have changed when it comes to the art of traveling itself. The physical act of packing, and getting to the airport, and checking in, and going through security, and waiting for your plane- all that stuff that seems stressful for a lot of people, has become second nature to me.

Saturday, I slept in and casually packed for my next few visits within the hour. Normally, this would have taken at least a few hours, while I tried everything on, and folded it all into small piles, being sure to match shoes with accessories and so on and so forth. Now everything has its place, certain shirts go with particular pants or shoes, and all my stuff packs up, folds up, zips up, rolls up and tucks away neatly into an organized roller bag. OK, there may be two large bags, but I’m on the road for weeks sometimes. A girl needs two bags if she has to look good all the time. And on occasion, shop for a new work shirt, or a pretty dress.

My patience while traveling has improved a lot. Not that I was too cranky to begin with- I love people watching, seeing new things, etc.- but now I just go with the flow if things cramp my style; these would be referred to as nonlethal inconveniences. I find that a large coffee fixes nonlethal inconveniences rather quickly. I don’t mind the lines at the airport anymore because I’ve discovered ways to get around them or talk my way to the front. My favorite is the “frequent traveler” line at most airports, because it is usually empty, and I justify my using it because I have a snazzy briefcase and, let’s face it- travel frequently. Sometimes, I can even get through 10-12 emails while waiting in line thanks to my Blackberry.* (*This would include work and personal e-mails thanks to both oh my phones!) Checking in for flights is a breeze now that United and Southwest airlines have barcode scanners that will interface with my Blackberr(ies). And sitting next to a crying baby or a Chatty Cathy- puuhhlease… I have my noise cancelling headphones. So, I can work productively on my flights, or catch up on some sleep- usually the latter, let’s be honest.

Some people hate traveling, but I love the stress of it all. Not traveling consistently and being on the go is going to be different- I’m sure I will develop cabin fever. But I guess to combat the cabin fever, I gotta develop a new schedule. And that will include, primarily, the gym. Like I said, patent pumps will be stored for a while, and tennis shoes will take the lead.

Enjoyed a lovely week off in San Francisco and the Napa Valley with friends; stay tuned for SF posts- now back to the grind for the last three weeks!

Southwest Airlines Free Drink Coupons: I like flying southwest for many reasons…
1.) I always check in early and get the perfect seat.
2.) They are witty and sassy and I like that on a flight.
3.) They have tasty snacks.
4.) Lots of flights = free roundtrip ticket!
5.) Lots of trips = free drink coupons, ie. one can enjoy a glass of wine en route to their final destination. Takes the stress out of traveling.

"It is the Greatest City of All Time"

Quick Cliff Notes update for my two week hiatus! Sorry I’ve been MIA for two weeks- not even a picture update! You’d think I was dead… well, I felt like I was. I had to take a week off from the road last week thanks to a nasty bout of bronchitis, an ear infection and also (yes, there’s an also) laryngitis. No talking for 10 days. 10 DAYS. As one friend put it, “it must’ve been harder not to talk for a whole week than to be stuck at home for a week.” True statement. So, basically, I took a week off to rest, recuperate and get my voice back. Boise, I LOVED you, but you got me sick… well, sort of. Special thanks to the two Doctors I visited, the grape cough medicine with codeine, and my boss, for giving me time to rest up last week.

Thankfully though, I’m back on the road and in San Diego and feeling infinitely better. Ron Burgundy so lovingly proclaims that, “it is a fact, [San Diego] is the greatest city of all time.” I don’t know if I will go that far, but I will say that being here makes it hard to focus on the work at hand thanks to the endless sunshine and ocean breeze. I’m not sure what is better; working with the lovely group here at the University of San Diego, or just being in this wonderful city. Walking across campus or down in Old Town, you get potent wafts of the old eucalyptus and pepper trees that line the streets, sometimes mixing with the smell of fresh corn tortillas if you happen to be walking by a Mexican taqueria, which there are many of in San Diego*. The ocean is never too far from sight, and the sun literally glistens across the surface. The fact that your senses are practically dancing with happiness at the brilliant sights, smells and tastes that San Diego has to offer, only adds to your positive mood during each day.

These next few days I have my evenings free, meaning that I’m going to begin my search for San Diego’s best beach to watch the sunset. As mentioned in earlier posts on this blog, the further west you go, the better the sunset, I think. So clearly, I have some photographic research to create to prove my point to you. Van Morrison on the radio, and windows rolled down, I’m sure to find the best beach this week, or at least one I like very much.

When not beach cruising, I’ll be sitting in the sun, conducting my meetings with members from The Organization, who naturally, are all beautifully tanned after a weeklong Spring Break. Jealous. This trip to USD makes me feel like I’m on Spring Break though because the weather is so great!

Return for best beach update later this week!

Land of Potatoes and Blue Turf

Greetings from Boise, Idaho! Never been to Boise before, and all I knew about the great state is that they are famous for their potatoes and Boise State, where I'm working this week, is well known for their bright blue-turfed football field*.

Well, I haven't made it to see the blue turf, that's my next stop, but I have experienced some gourmet potatoes. A dinner meeting at the Boise Fry Company in the capitols downtown was quite the experience for the tastebuds. The concept at this hole in the wall spot is built around the potato itself. You have a variety of potatoes to choose from; yesterday I chose Purple (apparently, they have an earthier taste than your typical Red Lady or Russet potato- I would agree) and you get to decide how you'd like them prepared- regular french fries, curly, shoestring, crisscut, etc. Once you've made that big decision, you pick a burger, as your side. I enjoyed a bison burger, with garlic aioli, roasted tomatoes, pickled onions and cheddar, ie. perfection on a toasted bun.

The whole experience was great, but the best part was the ketchup bar. Yes, you read it correct- ketchup bar (the next best thing to a salsa bar perhaps?). There were about 10 different types you could choose from but I enjoyed the spicy, garlic and blueberry ketchup the best. Blueberry ketchup is apparently one of their most popular ketchups, and although it sounds gross in the beginning, it was just sweet enough to create a really nice savory-sweet combo during your meal. So good.

If you ever find yourself in Boise, head over to Broadway to experience this unique spot. If fries and bugers weren't so bad for you, I'd probably go here everyday during my visit so that I could try something different on their menu- specifically The Bourgeois- fries cooked in duck fat and sprinkled with black truffle salt. Mmm. They also have a fair amonut of local brews on tap, and although I could not imbibe while working this week, definitley pair your meal there with an ice cold beverage. Surely it would take it to the next level.

Thinking a foodie blog is next on the docket for me... obviously, patent pumps will be worn during these adventures as well. Thoughts?

*My darling sister would complain that said turf added to the Ducks loss when they played Boise last year.

It's Worth It

I was talking with a friend last night about how much we were going to miss our jobs when we complete our contracts in mere weeks from now. Working for The Organization has been a priceless experience; worth the delays at airports and lost luggage, worth catching the flu twice this year and living out of a suitcase and on a tight budget, worth the time away from close friends and family. It’s been worth all of this for one thing- watching the development of The Organization. Oh, and the frequent flier points too.

Tonight I met with a handful of women, meeting after meeting after meeting (this is what I do during every visit, just in case you were curious), who all talked to me about finances, or of event planning, of ordering t-shirts or picking the perfect theme for their party. However no meeting was more meaningful to me than the discussion I had with one young woman about The Organization’s Ritual. I know, I know, corny as it sounds, but it was a conversation that I often have at each chapter, that truly means a lot to me. Each time the conversation is different, but the message about what is most important to The Organization remains the same. Obviously, because it is our Ritual I cannot share it with you Reader, but I can tell you one thing; I’m going to miss having this conversation at work on a regular basis.

At what other job would I get this opportunity? The opportunity I’m talking about is the one where I get to engage in a conversation with someone and discuss the importance of our shared values, the meaning of our membership and Ritual, the bonds that we share beyond our mere friendship, the importance of those three special letters. You could argue, I guess, that you could have that same conversation in any workplace whose corporate culture you admired and enjoyed, because really, there are some folks out there who feel just as strongly about their company as I do about The Organization. But I would most likely disagree with you if you argued with me, proclaiming that this job was fabulous, the most meaningful, and the only time I could engage in special conversations, like the ones I’ve been having, with people who appreciate The Organization, just as much as I do.

Anyway, what I was getting to is that me and my friend came to the conclusion that no matter what job you have, there will always be things to gripe about, something that bothers you, that challenges you- but really, we have it pretty good right now working for our respective Organizations. Sure, things on the road may not have been ideal at times, they may have angered or frustrated me, or challenged me on a new level. But really, if life was perfect, what would be the point of it all? I feel thankful that once again, The Organization is helping me to realize these important lessons, especially through our Ritual and through my experiences.

Travel Speakers: I spend a lot of time alone in hotel rooms, sitting in empty offices working on paperwork, etc., so these portable speakers can brighten up any empty room. Whether I’m working, hanging out, getting ready, or having a small party (yes I use these when I'm NOT working too), these speakers attached to an MP3 player make all the difference. I’m a lot happier when I’m surrounded by music, so these make bunking alone in a hotel room in the middle of nowhere a lot more enjoyable. Phillips makes some great ones for under $30, left,or you can get all fancy with Magellan speakers, right, for a bit more.

A Spoon, a Tumbler and Winery Tours- in the Snow

This last week off has taken me from Santa Barbara, all the way to Indianapolis- via, Denver, Charleston, Charlotte, Elon, and Cincinnati, naturally.

Well, you know how I finally made it down to Charleston (driving 6 hours through that damn blizzard) but you don’t know what I got to do while I was there! Highlights included a visit to the Charleston Historical Society where I purchased a Lyre gate necklace (designed after the famed Lyre gates all over the city), a historic Carriage ride through the Holy City, and finally a fabulous dinner and night out at High Cotton Restaurant and The Blind Tiger(yup that's right- they're on 10best.com). Our shopping trip to the City Market was by far my favorite though. I purchased an antique ring fashioned out of a spoon. AND, it only just got antique status because it was made in 1910- a century old!

Following a fun and fondue-filled Valentine’s, I headed north to Elon for the night where I got to meet up with some old friends for a snowy reunion at the Piedmont Ale House. Despite the bad service, it was tasty as always and so fun to watch new friends meet old friends. I even had time to make it to the Beehive, where I got to visit with the little ones and *Pogo Pam, who, very kindly, gave me my very own travel tumbler. Great for having in my hotel room!

After a night in Burlington, we (a fellow world traveler- in case you were wondering) drove up to Indianapolis, with the intent on stopping at various Virginia and West Virginia wineries on our drive up- great idea right? Well sneaky Old Man Winter had other plans it seems, and the last few weeks of snow in the north prevented us from off-roading in the Virginia back country and sampling some of their finest fortified grape juice as planned. Maybe snow and wine tasting don't really mix? Dreams dashed, we continued through the snow and sought new adventures instead, so just outside Cincinnati we stopped for a delicious Creole meal to celebrate Mardi Gras. I even got Mardi Gras beads!

When we finally made it to Indianapolis, I was on my own again and had the opportunity to explore the city that I “technically” work out of. Although it was snowy and icy, not my favorite combination whatsoever, I did take myself out for walks around the Capitol, downtown in search of tasty local fare and to some darling shops. I even got a home cooked meal with my best friends mom- quite a treat. It was the perfect little break.

My week off ended with an awesome visit to Oliver Winery, a small, family-owned estate in Bloomington, Indiana. Finally made it wine tasting! And yes- that’s right- INDIANA. They have their own state wine you know.... My travels this year have afforded me the opportunity to see some really cool wineries all over the country, and this was definitely one of them.

Snow drifts and ice delayed my flights a bit to Great Salt Lake, but now that I’m finally here, I am getting to enjoy a bit of the Winter Wonderland here in Utah. No wineries nearby… but there is PLENTY of snow to keep me busy these next few days!

A Year in Review...

My blog posts have been few and far between these last few weeks for a handful of reasons:
1.) I have been traveling like crazy! New place every 4 days, new group to meet with and work with. New reports to fill out. Laundry to do, weather to battle. Sleep to try and catch up on.... Not likely though on the sleep part.
2.) During my last visit at UC Santa Barbara, the sun was out. I haven't seen the sun for what feels like months, so I spent every opportunity I could outside. How wonderful is the beach in February? It was sooooo wonderful- see the posting below for pictures!
3.) I've been doing a little job searching on the side too... Free time is consumed with resume building and online networking.

So dear Reader, I have missed you and have thought of so many things to share with you. I was at the Denver Airport a few days ago, awaiting a flight that would eventually drop me in Charleston, South Carolina. Well, one massive snowstorm later and I was driving down from Charlotte, North Carolina, because my flight had been cancelled. Thankfully though, I met up with some Elon alum to celebrate Valentine's Day over the long weekend. We walked through the streets of Charleston, catching up with one another, and searching for lyre’s that were hidden all over the historic city. During all these adventures though, I got to thinking about where we all had been in the last year. In retrospect, it is so strange to think about where I was a mere year ago from this month...

This time last year, I had just interviewed for my current position with The Organization, and was preparing to fly up for an in-person interview in Indianapolis. I had an 8am yoga class at Elon – in fact, I had five class periods! I had three jobs; working at the art gallery, babysitting frequently and working on campus at the local Greek Apparel store. I was single and celebrating Valentine’s Day with girlfriends, spent tons of time with my school friends, and was rarely alone.

I may have still spent Valentine’s Day with my girlfriends this year, but things are in a whole new place then where they were last year…. They say time flies when you're having fun- well, I think once you get old, ie. 23, things just fly by- fun or not! Yes, my travels have been fun, yet always challenging and intriguing. Class and studying has been replaced with meetings and reports; my job is full time and takes me all over the country, not just all over Burlington, North Carolina. I'm still with friends, new friends though- and most of the time I’m with them, but it is not the same. All in all, this last year has been one of extreme change and challenge. But, I’m not afraid to admit that it has been an amazing challenge, one I’ve looked forward to every step of the way, one I’ve appreciated, and really… a challenge I’ve come to love.

It will be a few more weeks before I celebrate the one year anniversary of landing this job with The Organization, but at the same time, it will be only a few more weeks before I’m done with this position all together. I find myself in this strange void, where will I go next? But, I have faith that, despite the uncertainty (and crappy economy), these last few months of traveling in my Patent Pumps will prepare me for “whatever” comes next. And really, “whatever” could mean moving on to the next big city and starting a new life, new job, or moving back home and working part time (please cross your fingers it's not the latter though). Regardless, I’m thankful, as always, for the opportunities I’ve had, the relationships I’ve cultivated and the miles I’ve logged on the road. Next stop, Salt Lake City... but before then, an update on my weekend travels to come!

Cross Country Lite

From Santa Barbara, CA to Indianapolis, IN in 5 days. With stops in Charleston, SC, Charlotte, NC, Galax, VA, and Cincinnati, OH. And I didn't even have to drive!

No time to write on the road (too many things to do with lots of wonderful people), pictures will suffice for now.

Travel Obsession #6

Nintedno DSi: I realize that I am 23 years old, but even grown ups have to have fun. Although this device is marketed more towards kiddos, I use it when I don’t want to be on my computer anymore, ie. I’m done messing around on facebook and reading blogs, I just want to relax and rest my brain. My favorite games: Sims Castaway Island 2 and Brain Craze, choc full of Sudoku, vocabulary words and other brain teasers for the over 18 range… My DS also has the capability to go online so that I can download other games from Nintendo.com!

Good visit? I think yes.

This group I'm currently working with from The Organization clearly knows how to take care of a consultant. I have enough food here for an entire month on the road! How lucky am I?

Next stop: Southeast?

I asked for your help, and here's what you said:

*Southeast- The winner and with 37% of you picking this location. You must all be from the Southeast... I do think that I left a piece of my heart in North Carolina though. Strongly considering the move east again.
*Northeast- The Northeast was the second place winner with 22% of votes. Very surprising. Too cold up there guys!
*NorCal- 17% of the votes, making San Francisco the third most preferred location. I thought Norcal would be in the top 3 for sure.
*SoCal- 14% of the votes-I love you SoCal, but I have to see what else is out there.
*Northwest- 3 votes. How sad. I thought the Northwest would win for sure.

Well folks, I am taking all of this into consideration as I plan for the next half of my year. Until then, you're just gonna have to follow where my patent pumps take me next- I just updated my schedule!

Travel Obsession #5

The Classic Pashmina: Traveling to a cold climate and need a scarf? Going out on a hot date and need a colorful accessory? Flying for 5 hours and need a comfy pillow or blanket to make the flight enjoyable? I love traveling with pashminas, in a variety of colors. Their multi-functional use makes them a must have for all female travelers out there, although I guess guys, you could use them too. I have lots of pahsminas, but my favorites are black, purple and coral.

Frequent Flyer Points

WOW! It seems as if the Southeast is winning on the re-location map! Somewhat surprised... sort of thought NorCal would win. Hmmm... still a couple more days to vote- be heard!!

I'm planning future travel and just looked at my frequent flyer points. In the last week they increased about 10,000 miles! All thanks to the Beehive trip of course... I'm probably going to use them in a trip to visit them later in the year though. Get excited Five.

Tomorrow, I will earn almost 1000 points (on United of course- my preference for airlines after Southwest) flying from Indianapolis to Oakland. What a deal. And then a week later, 500 more for flying from Sacramento to Santa Barbara via Los Angeles. And then after that, I will travel east again for a little Valetines day visit with the Charleston crowd... they must be the ones voting "Southeast." That will be another 1000 miles there and back. That's almost 15,000 points earned since the New Year. Awesome.

For those of you who have seen George Clooney's latest film, "Up in the Air," I thankfully don't "have a number I'm going for," but I do want to reiterate his statement on flying that really, it is all about the points. Oh, and free drink coupons. Thanks Southwest.

What I'm listening to. Right now.

You know me. I listen to the same stuff ALL the time, ie. U2, Sting, Doobie Brothers, Jimmy Buffet, John Mayer. I’m not too creative, but I know what I like so that’s good I guess. As my dear cousin would put it, “it’s time for you to crawl out from under your rock Britt and discover the real music out there.” I know. He is right. He is right all the time actually, I just don’t like arguing with him. However, thanks to him and some other musically inclined folks, I’ve discovered my new favorites for 2010 and all my time on the road.

-The Black Keys- bluesy rock with an edge. I listen to them when I’m trying to be productive.
-Owl City- I thought this one man show was maybe on acid when I first listened to him, but it’s all really upbeat and clever. I like listening to it when I’ve had a particularly rough day because it makes me so happy.
-The Stranglers- Not the greatest name, but flouncy, flowy music that is just feel good stuff. It goes with the background and fits in anywhere where you need ambient noise.
-Teddybears- Dashboard-esque. That’s all I have to say right now though. Still researching and forming my opinion of them, but enjoying them too.
-The Flaming Lips- My favorite song, “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.” Yah, when I first read that I was like… really? But it’s got a decent beat and tells a nice story. All their stuff is very laid back, just how I like my tuneage.

I’m up for more suggestions and artists to explore though, so leave me a comment if you’d like to share what your favorites are. I like everything except for really hard rock and super abstract stuff. Like I said, you know me, I’m easy going, you’d know what I’d like listening to on the road. The Organization has so many songs and they very often get stuck in my head, so I’m open to all distractions from the charming, clapping and singing and smiling that I’m exposed too on a regular basis.

Reunited

Sure it's fuzzy, but it's because we're happy.

Throw a dart at the map

The polls are back and I need your help…

Being Ms. World Traveler, I am of course extremely open to the idea of moving to a new city for the next chapter in my life. New job, new city? I can’t be living out of a suitcase forever! Here’s my requirements now, so you can help me make the best decision… coastal state, by a major airport and big city, BUT also with some open space, country side-ish if you will. I have to be able to go places, but have my own, quiet space too. As per post below, inclement weather is not preferred, but tolerable.

So, cast your vote. Where will my patent pumps go next? Granted wherever I go, there’s gonna be a lot of them to move. Good thing I’m good at packing. VOTE NOW on the right. You have one week.

Singing (barefoot) in the Rain

We may be able to handle forest fires and earthquakes, but the slightest drizzle and we Californians will slink away in fear. We can handle traffic on the 405, movie star governors who run the state into bankruptcy and young starlets who lead wild and crazy social lives, etc., but drizzle? Never. Well, today we had a lot more than drizzle, in fact we had torrential downpours, flash floods, mudslides and even… a tornado. I was out working on UCLA’s campus today and got caught in the torrential downpour (being reported on the news as the “STORM OF 2010” by the way). Because Southern California campuses don’t experience rain often, they don’t have good drainage systems, and because they don’t have drainage systems, the campus floods. Flooding equals puddles, and puddles mean wet shoes. Well, this world traveling, patent pump lover didn’t want to get her shoes wet today. They were canvas, with adorable zipper bows and extremely moisture absorbent, ie. super cute. SO, during today’s storms I walked over a MILE back to where I was staying, BAREFOOT, because I didn’t want to get my shoes wet. They also had no slip guard so I didn’t want to eat it in a puddle, but really, I just didn’t want to mess my shoes up. Now tell me, is that commitment or what?

On the flipside of walking home in the pouring rain and looking like a wet rat when I finally arrived back home, I did have a diet coke and a string cheese, the famous diet of a traveling consultant if you didn’t know. A mere hour later, the rain let up and the sun began shining beautifully from out behind the clouds. It looked like the picture perfect California afternoon that visitors only dream of. Perfect timing too, because as The Organizations recruitment event approached, the weather let up and people were happy again sans the rain. We Californians, we just aren’t the same without all that sunshine.

Funny to think that a mere year ago I’d be happy to brave the snow on a walk to work in a pea coat and wellington’s, but now I don’t dare go out in the rain, even if it’s drizzling. My weak California tolerance for inclement weather has returned and I love it.

Today’s lesson
: don’t forget to pack umbrella and rain coat alongside patent pumps. And maybe, don’t wear (cute) canvas shoes in the rain.

More than just networking...

One of my favorite parts about working for The Organization is that I’m always surrounded by people who I feel comfortable with- not just in a conversation or during a workshop, but really comfortable with- giving advice, seeking support, sharing stories, etc. The bond that we share is so reassuring, and I’m going to be both saddened and scared to work in an environment where I lose that special connection. Granted, there will always be other things which we can relate to one another with, eg. wine, travel, art, family structure, obsession with shoes, music, yada yada yada… but right now, I feel pretty special to have this unique connection at work. A very sisterly “corporate culture” if you will…..

In the last week, I’ve worked with a handful of volunteers and alumnae from The Organization who have really given a lot to the efforts here at UCLA. I’m thankful for them for their commitment, innovation, enthusiasm, but most importantly, their friendship. I know that I will not be working for The Organization forever, but I do know that these women will be my friends for longer then my tenure at the office.

Short, sweet, and to the point.

Back in the saddle again...

… and what a hard saddle it was to get onto after practically a month off!!! To be quite honest, I was dreading heading back to work. I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like when I started up again, especially after such a long break. I was anxious when it came to packing all my things up for 5 weeks, and am sure that even now, I’ve left something at home. I was a tiny bit tired of traveling, which was also a huge surprise to me, and not looking forward to living out of a suitcase. (I’ve gotten used to spreading out into a room and having ALL of my shoes to choose from in my closet.) Most nerve-racking though, was surely how many e-mails were going to be in my inbox when I turned my work computer back on.

Well, what a waste of time to be worrying about all those things! Come Saturday when I officially came back on the grid, I drove down to LAX to pick up another one of my patent pumped colleagues. It was wonderful to catch up with her, hear about her vacation and be “on the road” with another consultant. We headed down to Fullerton where we met up with another consultant and a whole group of motivated, energized and excited women from The Organization. They were on a retreat, outlining their 5-year plan, preparing for recruitment and enjoying the society of their sisters. :D I was immediately ready for work again, feeding off of their bright conversations, cheery dispositions and growing love for The Organization. What a great day back at work- I hope that kinda stuff happens for everyone!

Now I must get back to my 100+ emails... I wasn't wrong about that!
